劉師培的前半生，遠遠看去非常之多變，細細一理卻能發現一貫性的東西。從1903年科舉會試前夕看起，他一方面有著同齡人當中非常超前的思想意識和知識視野，但另一方面又受制於思想時潮和前輩的影響。一方面深懷熱忱和理想，但另一方面又名利心切、急於用世，後者最終在這場『精神長跑』中勝出，為日後的人格淪喪埋下了伏筆。
