理想主义者认为僵化的政治体制背叛了马克思对自由的承诺，资本主义的发展至今也没有摆脱他所批判的种种不人道和异化。改革开放后成长起来的几代中国人也从没梳理清楚自己和马克思之间的复杂关系。自由派的“反马克思主义者”经常采取纯经济的视角看待政治和经济的关系，未尝不像是“经济基础决定上层建筑“的回响；自认顺服马克思的“非官方马克思主义者”又很难把他们的主张和马克思本人所极力反对的改良主义和工联主义区分开。
